What is the first thing you think of when you think of moving? Does a feeling of utter dread come over you? Moving Day does not need to be a drag. Nor does it need to be dull. There are many ways to put a positive spin on the task of moving. You only need to get creative.
MUSIC MAKES THE WORLD GO ROUND
When thinking of ways to liven up your moving process, the first thing that comes to mind is music. Experts have proven that music can ward off depression, improve your blood flow and otherwise ease stressful situations. A good playlist, selected ahead of time is a great way to make your moving day a more relaxed atmosphere as well as create a sense of excitement. If you don’t have access to a music streaming service then try your favorite radio station.
CREATE A PARTY ATMOSPHERE ON MOVING DAY
Okay, I know what you just thought when you read that heading. And no, I’m not talking about a thrown down, stomp your feet hootenanny. However, I am talking about creating excitement about you. Prepare portable snacks and drinks ahead of time so that you can easily set up a food spread for those who come to help you pack and move. I mean, you already have the tunes going, so why not add some food to the mix and create a “moving party atmosphere.”
COSTUMES FOR MOVING DAY
Now, let’s take this a step further. So, you know you already have to get up and get dressed for moving day. Why not pick a theme for the day and have all who participate dress for that theme? It could be something as simple as a single color that you pick so that everyone is wearing the same color t-shirt. Or even toss in a fun hat and masks to match?
A WORD ABOUT CHILDREN, PETS AND MOVING DAY FUN
While children may be underfoot and sometimes in the way when one is trying to move, it is a good idea to include them in the task as well as the fun. They may not be able to do much, but it will make them feel a part of the move. Remember that moving may be a bit frightening to a child since they are moving away from a familiar place to an unfamiliar home.
One idea comes to mind for those who have pets and children. If the children are old enough, they could be the appointed pet sitter for the day; making sure the dog is walked, water bowls are full, treats are given in intervals to the cats, etc.
While the children are pet sitting, they could also decorate some moving boxes, especially if they are the boxes contain their belongings. Give them some crayons or markers and they will come up with the ideas for decoration on their own.
Once you have gotten to the new location, allow the children to set up a box fort in their new room for added fun.
The continual idea here is to make moving day fun, but the basis of this is to put a positive spin on an otherwise grueling task.
