Summer 2019 officially begins on Friday, June 21st. To get us started, let’s have a little summertime fun. Here is a list of songs of summer trivia question. Summertime. And the living is easy.

Summertime, summertime, sum sum summertime

Once there were greenfields, kissed by the sun

There’s a summer place, where it may rain or storm but I’m safe and warm.

Though we gotta say goodbye for the summer, darling I promise you this

Now that we have you singing [smile], it’s time to get out and enjoy the summer sun, but not without taking note of some safety tips for summer.

High Temperatures/humidity

Here in Central Florida we can expect more of the characteristically high temperatures and humidity. As you age, you naturally have a lower volume of water in your body. Therefore, seniors are more susceptible to dehydration. With the high heat index this time of year, it certainly is a time when it’s important to be aware of one’s liquid intake.

The general rule of thumb for the amount of water one should drink is

8oz. of water 8 times per day

It is a good idea for anyone to use sunscreen with prolonged exposure to the sun. More so in seniors, since the aging process gives one more sensitive skin. This means that you will experience sunburn in a shorter period of time than when you were younger. Thus, the proper sunscreen for seniors would be between SPF 30 and SPF 50.

And don’t be afraid of trying some hats to aid in protecting you from the heat. For the ladies, there are oodles of cute hats to choose from. The ones with wide brims where you can choose a decorative scarf to help keep it on are always fun. The guys are certain to find a great baseball-type hat that has their favorite sports team or hobby image on it.

The important thing here is to make sure you stay protected while out having fun in the sun. Speaking of - - - what are some fun things for seniors to do outside this summer.

Yes good old fashion walking can bring a lot of adventure if you just look around. Why not “stop and smell the roses” as they say. Or appreciate listening to that tune a bird is singing. Don’t forget to breathe as deeply as you can while taking in the fresh air. Of course the time of day you take your walk is important. According to the Academy of Dermatology, the sun’s rays are strongest in North America between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. If you go out before or after those times, you will have minimal exposure to the sun.

Why not plan a picnic with a friend. It doesn’t have to be fancy. Preparation can be minimal: a sandwich, some fruit, a bottle of water and friend at a nearby park. If you can’t get to park, just go out and sit on the lawn chairs to have your picnic. Also, you can have a picnic for any meal: breakfast, lunch, dinner or just plain snacks. And who says you can’t have a picnic by yourself? Not me!!

If you have a portable hobby, why not move it out of doors for the day. Drawing, painting or what have you, plan an outside craft time with your grandkids. And if you are unable to move around freely at this time, then sometimes it’s just fun watching the kids outside while they do sidewalk chalk art or skip rope or throw a ball.

I hope your summer gives you many memories.
