Senior Citizen's Day

Updated: Dec 13, 2019

Mark it on your calendar, Wednesday, August 21 is Senior Citizen’s Day. This is a day when we recognize all that our Senior Citizens have contributed to us and our communities. So, if you have an elderly person in your life, this is a day to make them feel even more special than you already do. If you don’t have an elderly person in your life, then go out and find one to visit. You will be blessed if you do.

When I was young, my mom and dad would take us to a retirement community to visit with the people who had retired there from our church. After I grew up, I carried on this tradition with my own boys and took them to visit at retirement homes. Seniors love to be around young people. Some elderly folk do not have any kids of their own. Remember, this can be a blessing goes both ways, for you and for them.

Senior Citizen Day’s is actually an International observation, first introduced by the General Assembly of the United Nations in 1990. “The day is known to increase awareness of the factors and issues that affect older adults, such as age deterioration and the study of problems that affect their lives, elder abuse. It is also a day to recognize and acknowledge the contributions of older people to society.” “The history of the World Senior Citizen's Day dates back to 1988. It was officially founded by the former President of the United States of AmericaRonald Reagan. He had signed on August 19, 1988, the promulgation of 5847, which appeared on 21 August as National Day of the Third Age.”

  • Seniors are full of age-old wisdom. Maybe they have made mistakes (as we all do), but living to talk about it can give one quite an edge on some important knowledge.

  • Seniors are great at making you feel special.

  • Most of the elderly love to give and help as much as they can.

Go to a nursing home or retirement community and visit with some elderly person. Never mind that they are not YOUR senior citizen, just go and have a good time with someone there. You could play a game or else participate in a scheduled activity at the facility. Be sure to call ahead for this and clear it with the managers.

Visit with your own seniors in your family. Don’t forget to include your senior aunts, uncles as well as your parents and grandparents.

If you are a senior citizen, then CELEBRATE YOURSELF. You have made it to an age that many never did. This is a good reason to be happy. Try hanging out with some of your friends who are also seniors. Or just maybe you want to take that day to simply relax. Whatever, you decide, this is your day and you should be happy on it.

Some establishments recognize Seniors year-round. Here is a great website that lists some great restaurants, retail and clothing stores, travel companies, entertainment, groceries and miscellaneous items that are offered as year-round discounts:
