The long, hot days of summer are definitely upon us and if you’re like me, you’re feeling the heat. When I woke from a nap today, it 94 degrees outside. I had my air conditioning set as low as I possibly could, but was still hot inside and it was doing no good. Here are a few tips to help you stay cool during these hot summer days. I’m taking my own advice. LOL.
DRINK PLENTY OF WATER
Before we even get started, the first thing on your list for staying cool in the summer is to drink plenty of water. Avoid sodas and alcohol and just about anything caffeinated, as these liquids will actually dehydrate you.
BLANKETS & QUILTS ARE FOR WINTER
Do you still have heavy blankets or quilts on your bed? Put those away until the weather cools down again. This also goes for flannel sheeting. You may think you need them for the air-conditioned temperature in your home. But when summer is at its peak, even air conditioning is hard put to keep the temperature at a nice cool level. So, looks like you don’t need all the throws and such on the bed.
DRAW YOUR CURTAINS
Close your curtains while you are away, and if at all possible, all day long. If not all day, then certainly during the hottest parts of the day which generally begins after noon. It will lessen the amount of heat that comes seeping through the windows panes. Another good idea is to purchase room darkening curtains. These also work very well for combating the heat in a room.
DON’T GO OUT AFTER HIGH NOON
Speaking of the hottest parts of the day, you should also plan on having all your outside activities such as gardening, shopping or power walking out of the way before noon as well. Early morning is best for this sort of activities. While outside, you can place a wet cloth to the back of your neck for an extra way to cool down.
DON’T FOR GET YOUR PET DURING THE HEAT
Not only should you walk your pet during the coolest parts of the day, but you should also be sure to keep plenty of water for your dog or cat during the heated days of summer. Try putting an ice cube or two in their water throughout the day. It will be fun for them and cool them down as well. If you must carry your pets with you when you go out, do not leave them in a car without air.
BAKING IS NOT A GOOD IDEA DURING THE HEAT OF SUMMER
Instead of baking, try making ice box pies or smoothies for desserts. Swap out the use of your oven for microwavable dishes or else grill outside in the evenings after the sun has gone down.
